Ice of Lake Winnipesaukee site of weekend's 3 deadly NH snowmobile crashes

A NY teenager participating the Meredith fishing derby with his father as well as a MA man celebrating his 62nd birthday were among three people who died Saturday in snowmobile mishaps on Lake Winnipesaukee. The father and son chose to go for a snowmobile ride.

Sununu confirms the fatalities in two different locations of Lake Winnipesaukee.

Rescuers from Moultonborough and Tuftonboro fire departments and the Airboat and Fish and Game responded to the scene.

Conservation officers recovered Crosier's body later that night.

Jordan was uncertain whether the snowmobile riders, who have not yet been publicly identified, were from the area or out of town, and it was also unclear whether they were taking part in the Meredith Rotary Club Ice Fishing Derby, or simply riding for fun in the area.

"We have vehicles that go through the ice all the time, and we had probably half a dozen other vehicles go through the ice this weekend, but typically it happens close to shore or they don't break all the way through and they get out", he said.

Weiss survived by making it to the shore of Long Island.

Two people are dead and searchers fear the worst for a missing 15-year-old boy after snowmobiles plunged into freezing waters during an ice fishing derby in New Hampshire.

Two people are dead and one is still missing after several snowmobiles tried to go across Lake Winnipesaukee on Saturday.

The 48-year-old father was transported to Lakes Region Hospital and later released.

Rescuers searched for a third person after they found snowmachine tracks leading into the open water and a helmet floating nearby.

The father was rescued and is recovering in the Laconia hospital, but his son, believed to be a teenager, is still missing. The boy, meanwhile, drowned and was pulled from 73 feet of water about 9:30 a.m.

Jordan said teams will return to the scene at first light and use the camera to try to locate the boy's body. A dive team was standing by but was not needed, he said.

But he said the conditions on Lake Winnipesaukee are variable and risky. "We have areas that are open that have a very thin layer of ice with snow on top that are not safe".

Thousands of people were on the ice for the annual ice fishing derby, WMUR reported.

Names of the victims were withheld pending notification of family.

Incidents of people going through the ice aren't unusual, Morse said, but "snowmobilers going into the water like this, this is definitely unusual". Both accidents were on the northern end of the lake.
