Today is tax day

Taxpayers get a bit of an extension this year

EPIC sues IRS over Trump's tax returns

If you're in the middle of tax prep and you're not sure what to do next, call the IRS' tax help line.

He said if you are missing paperwork or can't file your taxes for some other reason it is important to file an extension, but an extension does not give you more time to pay owed taxes. So you will need to estimate the amount of tax you owe and pay it by April 18. There are exceptions for those serving in a combat zone, a qualified hazardous duty area, or those living outside of the United States, however. Tax expert Lagenia Arnold says business usually picks up around this time, because people sometimes wait until the last possible minute to file.

There are options for people who have not yet filed their taxes.

Tax returns are due today - April 18, 2017 - as is any remaining money you owe to Uncle Sam for 2016.

If you need to file an extension, you'll need to file form 4868.

In Florida, about 1.1 million taxpayers will file for an automatic six-month extension, giving them until October 16 to submit their returns. If you don't pay all you owe today, you can be hit by interest and penalties.

File, file, file. Although you maybe tempted to slam your computer shut and forget about filing for a few more weeks, don't.

In typical tax-filing situations, the IRS has three years to decide whether to audit - or, as the agency prefers to call it, examine - your return. People can request a six-month extension electronically through tax software, including FreeFile, by using Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

If you are a low income household, you may want to also look into the California Earned income tax credit. Fill out your name, Social Security number and other information to get an extension.

"The government is very clear, they don't typically contact people by phone, they definitely don't ask you for money over the phone, and they don't tell you to wire money or send debit cards, or things like that". Incorrect details can kick back your return or potentially make you late.

If a notice indicates a changed or corrected tax return, review the information and compare it with your original return.

Where can I file my tax returns online?

"In total, taxpayers claimed $105.6 billion in refundable tax credits", said the IRS report. If, however, you don't include all your earnings on your 1040, the IRS gets a longer window to decide on a potential audit, so you need to keep your tax records longer, too. All IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers now operate by appointment.
