The three victims of a gunman police said was targeting white people in downtown Fresno on Tuesday, and the security guard he's accused of killing days earlier, were fathers, sons, brothers and friends.
While working at a Motel 6, Williams and the suspect got into an argument, police said.
All four gunshot victims on Tuesday were white men, the Sacramento Bee reports, and Chief Dyer said that Mr Muhammad had displayed an anger against white people in Facebook posts.
All three victims were white. The suspect, Kori Ali. All three are now dead.
"I don't even know how his wife is going to broach the subject with the kids of daddy's never (coming) home", Light said. "We got a black man killing white people".
Muhammad is facing four counts of murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, officials said.
Police are searching for the revolver Muhammad said he tossed into a pile of clothing. That is why there were so many people there Thursday night- their faces bathed in candle-light trying to remember the good despite the suspect's apparent hate.
Randalls was married for eight years to a local elementary school teacher and they had two kids, a 4-year-old boy and 3-year-old girl. Dyer said Muhammad confessed to having shot Williams "because he felt that Williams had disrespected him".
Muhammad's worldview was thoroughly dominated by race. Dyer said Muhammad appeared to be proud of what he'd done.
"He said he is Muslim, but prays to seven different gods", the police chief said.
This is what happens when a racist killer operates around a thoroughly racist worldview. That crime remains under investigation by the Fresno Police Department and has not been submitted to the District Attorney's Office for review, said Assistant District Attorney Steve Wright. As for a motive, police said it had something to do with his longstanding hatred.
Police arrested Kori Ali Muhammad, 39, on Tuesday for killing three people in less than two minutes in a shooting rampage that apparently targeted strangers.
"And that's what he set out to do".
Dyer says in both of the final two murders Muhammad stood over the men firing shots directly into their bodies.
Zackary Randalls, a 34-year-old father of two young children, was killed.
Gassett, 37, of Fresno, had just picked up groceries at a Catholic Charities building when he was gunned down. He then gunned down 58-year-old David Jackson in the Catholic Charities parking lot. A woman who identified herself as Taylor's grandmother said Tuesday that the family last saw him on Easter Sunday.
Muhammad starting running, until he saw a police vehicle, which had arrived within minutes of the initial shots.
Muhammad did not run from Fresno police officers because he said he respected them, according to the police chief. "At the same time, he said he was not a coward". Dyer says he watched detectives investigate, then left and hid by a dumpster. "In fact, multiple times he laughed as he described what transpired".
But he said he doesn't think Muhammad is a terrorist driven by religious extremism. The guard, 25-year-old Carl Williams, was white. "Fortunately, he was taken into custody. he's not going to kill anyone else".
