Authorities said a 15-year-old Tennessee girl who disappeared with Cummins, who was her teacher, last month has been found safe in California and the teacher has been arrested.
"We couldn't be happier to tell you she will soon be on her way back home to Tennessee", Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn said.
The father of a 15-year-old Tennessee girl who disappeared with her teacher more than a month ago says he is overjoyed that his daughter has been found safe.
"I feel a little amusing because there were all kinds of indications that there was something a little amusing going on never occurred to me that she was 15 years old".
It could take weeks to extradite Cummins, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.
Detectives and a school resource officer contacted Thomas' father, Anthony, and got access to her call history.
January 31, 2017: The school is notified Cummins is under criminal investigation.
That day, detectives spoke with Thomas, who denied Cummins kissed her, records show.
"Upset over the incident, she went to Cummins' classroom", the documents state. "I don't want to disclose yet when she's going to be here because obviously, our goal is to seclude Elizabeth with her family". The complaint stated, "It wasn't like a makeout kiss, just a peck on the lips". Three days later the teacher was suspended.
Cummins and Thomas disappeared on March 13, sparking a cross-country manhunt made all the more hard as Cummins apparently changed his appearance and may have switched out the license plate on the vehicle he was driving, according to reports.
In the note Cummins indicated he had a job interview. Cummins was seen on surveillance footage filling up the Nissan with gas at a nearby convenience store.
Jill Cummins had filed for divorce, saying she felt betrayed by her husband.
The nearest police station from the cabin, O'Hare said, is two hours away. "Cummins denied doing anything wrong and asked his wife to forgive him". All information in the investigation was turned over to law enforcement by the school system. An Amber Alert had been issued for Thomas.
March 17 - Cummins' wife pleaded for him to come home. Investigators were then able to use the car's VIN number to confirm that it belonged to Cummins and kept the vehicle under surveillance for several hours, Devine said.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said it worked tirelessly for the past five weeks, looking into more than 1,500 leads from all 50 states.
One of the email drafts shared with WAAY begins with Cummins telling Thomas that he "saw you standing next to you [sic] backpack this morning".
"They would write the message and let it save as a draft", Cooper said.

Two loaded handguns were recovered in the cabin, as well as personal items belonging to the pair, according to the sheriff's office. Snow is still on the ground in some places.
