President Donald Trump denounced the appointment of a special counsel to investigate his campaign's ties with Russian Federation today, repeatedly calling it an unprecedented "witch hunt" that "hurts our country terribly".
How did we reach this unprecedented place in history? We must know what the Russians did, how to prevent its repetition and if Americans colluded in the attack.
"He is all about the business of investigating, being fair, but thorough", Swecker asserted. "We can not afford to lose this one".
Mueller was named as special counsel on Wednesday, one day after a report surfaced that Trump had requested ex-FBI Director James Comey end any investigations involving National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation. Comey is not without critics.
In the memo, Rosenstein wrote that the FBI director had violated long-standing Justice Department practices in his handling of the bureau's investigation of Clinton's use of a private email server when she was secretary of state. His integrity was unquestioned, however, and his independence assured. It immediately escalated the legal stakes - and the potential political damage - for a president who has tried to dismiss the matter as partisan witch hunt and a "hoax". Mueller will have to answer to Rosenstein because the investigation has been classified as "special" and not "independent". Rosenstein's announcement comes a day after his appointment of former F.B.I.
According to a person close to the White House, Rosenstein was upset about the narrative that emerged from the White House the evening of May 9.
Yet there's no question that Comey's firing at least temporarily hobbled Rosenstein's public standing. Comey was sacked on May 9. Flynn, Trump's fired national security adviser, is a key figure in the Trump-Russia investigation. Mueller has the ability to take the investigation in nearly any way he sees fit. "So I think the biggest legal change seems to be that Mr. Mueller is going to proceed forward with the idea of a criminal investigation, versus the counterintelligence investigation".
"I think we'll have a more hard time getting information here for the intelligence committee", Republican Senator Ron Johnson said.
The legal terminology can be confusing. "The addition of Robert Mueller as special counsel is consistent with this goal, and I welcome his role".
"We need to coordinate with Director Mueller [on] how we seek witnesses, how we seek documents", Cornyn said. Rosenstein will not attempt undue interference, and Mueller would not, in any case, respond to such an attempt.
The appointment won Rosenstein wide praise from Republicans and Democrats.
And with Mueller on the job, Democrats will have to accept it. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Mueller "exactly the right kind of individual for this job". Then it took more than a month for the panel to announce its first public hearing after Conaway took over the investigation: an open hearing with former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan on May 23 to discuss matters "related to Russian active measures during the 2016 election campaign".
