He was my best friend.
As previously reported, the late star was found dead in the early hours of Thursday, May 18, after performing for a sold-out crowd at Detroit's Fox Theater.
"Chris, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan and may have taken more Ativan than recommended dosages".
Vicky Cornell, Cornell's wife, said that when she spoke to her husband after the Detroit show, he told her he may have taken "an extra Ativan or two".
Chris Cornell, a Seattle native, wrestled with heroin and other drugs as well as depression most of his life, once even calling a metal magazine to confirm a tour cancellation from a payphone at a rehab clinic.
In a 1994 interview with Rolling Stone, he said he had used drugs daily from age 13.
Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro said he was "so so stunned" to hear of Cornell's death, saying it was "such a bad and sad loss". He never completed high school and said he barely talked to anyone for two years as a teenager.
Cornell took to Twitter Wednesday night announcing that the group had just arrived in Detroit, and a clip of the groups 2012 release "By Crooked Steps" was posted to his official Facebook page before he was later found in his hotel room, the New York Times reported. "All the friends that I had were still (messed) up with drugs and were people that I didn't really have anything in common with".
It was revealed that Karayiannis called a friend to ask him to check on Cornell because she was not able to get in contact with him. "What happened is inexplicable and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details. I know that he loved our children and he would not hurt them by intentionally taking his own life", Karayiannis said.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office concluded Thursday that Cornell, 52, killed himself by hanging, but said that a full autopsy report had not been completed.
"He was a huge influence, one of the greatest singers ever to come out of Seattle, maybe the greatest single voice", said Charles R. Cross, a Seattle-based music journalist and author who knew Cornell personally.
Besides Soundgarden, Cornell founded the early grunge band Temple Of The Dog and sang with Audioslave - a supergroup with members of Rage Against the Machine.
Grief-stricken Chris Cornell fans left flowers at memorials across Seattle for the musician whose forceful, somber songs helped cement the city's place in rock history.
