Trump intends to nominate Kelly Knight Craft of Kentucky to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Canada.

In the US, authorities have identified the gunman who shot at Republican Party Congressmen.

Trump will also nominate former Republican National Committee co-chair Sharon Day to serve as USA ambassador to Costa Rica.

Both positions will require Senate confirmation.

It was an unexpected turn of events on the day that President Trump's 71st birthday turned into a morning when shots rang out at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, only a 20-minute drive from the White House, as reported by the Inquisitr.

"We are strongest when we are unified and when we work together for the common good", he said.

Bailey and Griner were protecting House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who is one of 10 Congress members who have a protective detail due to his leadership role as the third-ranking Republican in the House.

U.S President Donald Trump said those officers saved lives. He was operated on at an area hospital and is listed in critical condition.

The gunman has been identified as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill. Some Indiana's Congressional delegation know Scalise personally, including Senator Joe Donnelly (D-IN) and Congressman Andre Carson (D-IN).

Rep. Mo Brooks, (R-Alabama), lauded the bravery of the two Capitol Police officers, saying that despite being wounded, they returned fire in an effort to protect the congressmen.

Jackson rode in the motorcade, but had been to the hospital to confer on Scalise earlier, Spicer said. The assailant, prepared with "a lot of ammo", fought a gun battle with police before he, too, was shot and later died.

Trump praised Scalise as "a patriot" and "a fighter" and said Scalise has the prayers of the "entire nation" behind him.

When asked by reporters whether there's usually a security detail, Rep. Joe Barton, the manager of the Republican team, said, "Yeah, there is".

The president and first lady stopped by the hospital and brought two bouquets of flowers with them, according to the New York Post.

The White House said Trump will speak from the Diplomatic Room at 11:30 a.m.

"Congressman Steve Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip".

U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis of IL credited U.S. Capitol Police officers on the scene, saying had they not been there, it "would have been a massacre".

Trump also met with other Capitol police officers who have gathered at the hospital and thanked them for their service.
