Erdogan's comments marked the strongest intervention yet by a powerful regional ally of Doha eight days after Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with Qatar and imposed stringent economic sanctions on it. Accompanied by Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, and Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, the premier held meeting with Saudi King Shah Salman bin Abdul Aziz at the Jeddah Royal Palace to discuss the crisis engulfing the Middle East.

Ministry Spokesman Bahram Ghasemi tells reporters in a weekly news conference: "These countries should try to settle their differences at the negotiating table in a positive and comprehensive process". Qatar has denied those charges. Other nations also operate forces out of Qatar.

Typically, cargo for Qatar stops at Dubai's massive deep-water Jebel Ali port, then gets put on smaller boats heading to Doha.

Qatar yesterday announced it had launched direct shipping services to ports in Oman, a move that bypasses a Gulf "blockade" on a country largely dependent on food imports.

He also criticised Saudi Arabia and the UAE for shutting down the airline's offices.
