Sixers land No. 1 pick, chance to draft Fultz

Celtics Reportedly Trade Number One Pick to Sixers

CAMDEN - Markelle Fultz arrived at the Philadelphia 76ers' training complex Saturday night. Starting in 1985, the National Basketball Association implemented a lottery system in order to determine which team receives the No. 1 overall pick in that year's draft.

In addition to this year's No. 3 choice, the Celtics received another first-round pick that comes with several conditions. I think, ideally, we would like to not only have max flexibility now but also maintain max flexibility next year when this group has a chance to grow a little bit more and perhaps more ready to add a marquee free agent.

This could be one of those rare trade that helps both teams. They are in position to contend for a championship right away, but it will take superstar talent to deliver a more effective punch to the LeBron James-led Cavaliers than Boston could in the 2017 playoffs.

Boston will receive the Lakers' 2018 pick if it falls between No. 2 and No. 5.

Team Africa will be captained by the Los Angeles Lakers' Luol Deng, a two-time NBA All-Star who is from the South Sudan, and the Atlanta Hawks' Thabo Sefolosha, an 11-year NBA veteran whose father was born in South Africa.

"I think he's supertalented, superexplosive", said Cal guard Jabari Bird of Pac-12 rival Fultz following Monday's Sixers workout.

The actual details of the trade are more favorable to the Celtics than most reports suggested (I didn't see anyone report Boston could have the option to take Philly's pick in 2019 if the first-rounder rolls over until then). The trade only makes sense if they sense Boston would select Jackson at No. 3 overall.

Once Boston landed the No. 1 pick in the May 16 draft lottery, Colangelo said he expressed his interest in the top selection to Zarren.

"We've been evaluating these kids for a couple of years", Danny Ainge, Boston's president of basketball operations, told reporters via conference call on Monday. Maybe someone like Josh Jackson, Lonzo Ball, Jonathan Isaac, Jayson Tatum, or De'Aaron Fox. "With the certainty of No. 1, we know we control our circumstances". But I think we're still moving on the same path. ...

Philadelphia will hold the No. 1 pick for the second straight year.

If the Sixers do indeed select Fultz, they will have a young and exciting core of Embiid (23), Fultz (19), Ben Simmons (20), Dario Saric (23), and Robert Covington (26).

The Sixers will, nearly assuredly, use the top pick on Washington point guard Markelle Fultz, while the Celtics are still mulling all of their options with the third pick, whether Josh Jackson, Jayson Tatum, or trading it away for veteran help. He would not reveal the targeted player, but the worst-kept secret is that the Sixers will use the pick on Washington point guard Markelle Fultz.
