From the deck of an aircraft carrier to the sub-zero temperatures of a Himalayan military outpost, tens of thousands of Indians joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday to celebrate the third International Yoga Day.

Amids chants of "Modi-Modi", the Prime Minister said yoga, which connects body with mind and intelligence, is today playing an important role in connecting the whole world.

Putting emphasis on wellness apart from physical fitness Modi said that Yoga is helpful for achieving wellness.

Observing the third edition of International Yoga Day, the Navy personnel performed Yoga onboard Indian Naval Ship (INS) Jalashwa and Kirch in the Bay of Bengal. In the Netherlands, the largest ever Yoga event was held with participation of over 1,000 people.

Yoga guru Shamshad Haider, founder of Yoga Pakistan, which runs over 50 clubs across the country, told IANS over telephone: "Due to the Ramdan and people preparing for Eid, we could not organise a big event this year".

Police in New Delhi closed roads to make room for a mass yoga session held amid tight security in the heart of the capital. He said Yoga as cheap health insurance.

Modi said since the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day for Yoga, awareness about yoga had been rising the world over leading to creation of a new job market.

"Many countries which do not know our language, tradition, or culture, are now connecting to India through yoga", Modi said in his address to a almost 50,000-strong crowd.

The special Yoga Session at the Indian Embassy was conducted in line with the common protocol on yoga issued by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.

After addressing the participants, Modi came down from the dais and performed yoga with children.

Participants seen mid-pose at an International Yoga Day event inaugurated by Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan at Central stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. People had started thronging the venue since 5 in the morning.
