Winning smile of world's ugliest dog

But it comes with $1,500, a flashy trophy and massive attention. But Shirley, the founder of the Dogwood Animal Rescue Project in Sonoma County, took care of her, and after several surgeries, succeeded in getting her vision back.

She's a 125-pound Neapolitan Mastiff. Most of the 13 dogs she beat out were older and smaller.

Life seems to be unfair when an adorable little (ok, huge) dog is named the World's Ugliest Dog.

The World's Ugliest Dog of 2017 has been crowned... and folks, say hello to Martha, a Neapolitan Mastiff who is just adorable!

About 13 dogs turned up for a freaky competition that lines up ugliest dogs for the title of World's Ugliest Dog won by the three-and-a-half-year-old Neapolitan mastiff.

14 contestants vied for the prize but only one would be given the honor to be called the world's ugliest dog.

"The dogs don't care whether you call them ugly or attractive", she said.

The Associated Press (AP) reported that Martha made a major first impression on the judges at the World's Ugliest Dog event when she sprawled her ungainly body across the stage and evidenced her refusal to perform dog tricks.

At the competition, held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in California, the unsightly yet lovable dogs were paraded down a red carpet with the hopes of winning $1,500, a trophy and a trip to NY for media appearances. However, with his strong sense of smell, Moe was able to enjoy funnel cakes and other fried items.

A 16-year-old Brussels Giffon-pug mix named Moe, who was also the oldest in the competition, took second place.

"Notable past winners include Walle, a basset/boxer mix that waddled as he walked; Peanut, a tiny dog with a history of abuse; and Quasi Modo a short-spined mutt that was an audience favorite", the contest's website reads.
