India Tour of Sri Lanka 2017: Shikhar Dhawan Replaces Injured Murali Vijay

Shikhar Dhawan Replaces Injured Murali Vijay In India Squad For Sri Lanka Test Series

Shikhar Dhawan last played a Test for India in 2016 against New Zealand in a home series

The Tamil Nadu batsman was sidelined with a wrist injury during Australia's tour of India.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, on Monday, announced that Shikhar Dhawan would replace fellow opener Murali Vijay during India's tour of Sri Lanka later in the month.

Vijay suffered a wrist injury during Australia's tour of India and "has complained of pain in his right wrist while playing a preparatory match", read the BCCI's press release. "The BCCI medical team has therefore advised that Vijay should continue his rehabilitation program", a BCCI statement read.

Dhawan, who has been in good form in limited-overs, was initially ignored for the Test series. He has four hundreds to his credit. The 31-year-old Dhawan returns to the Test team after playing his last match against New Zealand in October 2016.

India will play a three-match Test series starting July 21. The left-hander had an outstanding run in the recently concluded Champions Trophy, where he smashed 338 runs from five games. The Virat Kohli-led Team India departs for a full-fledged tour consisting three Tests, five ODIs and a one-off T20 global on July 19. The attacking southpaw also scored 161 runs in the five-match ODI series against the West Indies. All the three Test matches will be played in Galle, Colombo and Kandy. However, India managed to win the four-Test series 2-1 to end the home season unbeaten.
