Even though October is less than three months away, it feels like Halloween has arrived after the first movie trailer for "Leatherface" was released on Monday.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series explores the origin story of its principal murderer in Leatherface, and if the latest NSFW trailer is any indication, it's going to be a family affair with murderous children and lots of bloody chainsaw action.
The movie stars Jessica Madsen, Sam Coleman, Sam Strike, and James Bloor as the escaped inmates, and Finn Jones (Loras Tyrell on Game of Thrones and Danny Rand on Iron Fist) and Stephen Dorff as the local law enforcement. The juxtaposition of innocent-sounding 1950s music and horrific imagery could be described as a bit heavy-handed but it gets the job done.
Trust us, this Red Band trailer isn't for the faint of heart.
Lily Taylor pops up as Sawyer family matriarch Verna, and in one touching moment she gives a youthful Leatherface his very first chainsaw as a birthday present (clearly Leatherface's development as a crazed killer was not an accident). We later see Leatherface sewing his first mask made out of human skin.
Millennium Films, which was behind the 2013 Texas Chainsaw 3D, is once again producing with Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman, and Carl Mazzacone for Lionsgate. The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre derived most of its effectiveness from the crudeness of Tobe Hooper's technique and the roughness of the 16mm photography, and subsequent Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequels and reboots have never been able to capture that movie's same sense of primal horror.
