Sunderland linked with move for Aston Villa defender

Leeds United are now searching for a center back in order to strengthen up their defence.

Sunderland are interested in Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick, according to the Birmingham Mail.

However, the Italian was sacked after only 12 games before Steve Bruce took over.

But the Villa Park hierarchy will be wary that their potential star man is also of interest to recently-relegated Sunderland, with the Black Cats looking to replace the departed Jermain Defoe who joined Bournemouth on a free transfer earlier this summer. However with the club getting off to a poor start, he ended up losing his place in the first team and would struggle to get first team appearances for the rest of the season.

The Wearsiders have recently added former League One striker James Vaughan to their squad, however it remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old has what it takes to be a consistent goal-threat at a higher level. However, he could be allowed to leave this summer, especially after the arrival of John Terry.

Brighton & Hove Albion academy product Elphick has yet to feature for Villa during pre-season due to a minor injury complaint.
