The newspaper says as officers arrived, gunshots were exchanged. Witnesses also said the driver may have acted in self-defense when he fired at least one shot, hitting Brown in his upper torso.

Police in Las Vegas say an officer is in stable condition at a hospital after being shot while responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle.

Police have blocked traffic in the area where the shooting occurred.

Sheriff Joe Lombardo said the officer is expected to make a full recovery.

Police say the officer was shot on the lower side of his chest and is being treated at University Medical Center. It is not yet known whether he was killed in the exchange of gunfire or whether it was self inflicted.
