WGC-Bridgestone Invitational: PGA Odds, Pick, Predictions, Dark Horses - 8/3/17

George W Bush was among the list of notable names to congratulate Jordan Spieth on his Open triumph, but the three-time major champion will not be taking driving lessons off the 43rd United States president any time soon.

WGC's Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone consistently proves a severe test of a golfer's all-round ability and has a proverbial who's who when It comes to previous winners.

"I mean there have been other times, the Masters in 2016 when defending or 17 trying to get it back, I've maybe felt that a bit, but this is just a major".

We make our second and final trip to OH for the 2017 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, which is played in Akron at the Firestone Country Club. Johnson has won three of the past four WGC events.

Open champion Jordan Spieth comes into the week as favourite to take the title and he is feeling refreshed after a week off following his success at Birkdale. It was won in 2010 by Hunter Mahan, in 2011 by Adam Scott, in 2012 by Keegan Bradley, in 2013 by Tiger Woods for the eighth time and in 2014 by Rory McIlroy. Stanley has no problem hitting greens and gaining on the field from tee-to-green, you just have to pray that Stanley will make his four footers this week.

But it is easy to forget that he missed a large part of the season through injury, as well as missing three cuts out of four. He overtook Dustin Johnson with his big win the the Open Championship. Sergio Garcia feels like a steal at 28-to-1 with the way he's played this year.

While Day's game is not at that level it was 12 months ago when he finished third behind Johnson, a significant turnaround is not beyond the Queenslander. Next up for him is the US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, where he has won twice before and where he holds the course record. There will be also be further intrigue surrounding Rory after it was reported that he had split from long-time caddie JP Fitzgerald after nine years together.

There has been rain predicted in the forecast which will simultaneously lengthen the course and soften the greens, so power hitters could enjoy an advantage, but then again we might witness a grindfest of golf at its toughest.

One guy who is qualified but not here is Brandt Snedeker.

I much prefer the chances of Branden Grace at 45/1, with the South African becoming the first player to shoot 62 in the third round of the Open Championship, en-route to a T5 finish at Royal Birkdale. Is one of the most dominant ball strikers in the world at the moment and I expect him to do very well this weekend - was 6 here in 2015. But, have no fear, Dustin Johnson has made over $6.5M on the tour.
