Arsene Wenger has conceded Arsenal are not "super optimistic" of star man Alexis Sanchez signing a new contract.

The Englishman has been at the club since 2011 but with just one year left on his contract, has been the subject of interest from Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool. "He had a little abdominal strain that he caught on Sunday morning in training".

"I'm convinced that (it) will happen soon", Wenger said when asked about the likelihood of a woman taking over a team in one of England's top two divisions.

"Personally, I think he is a hugely talented player".

But the Arsenal boss has said the 28-year-old will miss tomorrow's curtain-raiser at home to Leicester as well as the trip to Stoke the following weekend.

"Alexis Sanchez is always a loss for us, of course".

The Chile forward missed pre-season after being granted extra time off following the Confederations Cup and has been ruled out of Friday's game due to an abdominal strain.

Wenger added: "I'm convinced in 10 or 15 years it will not necessarily be a football specialist who is a manager of a club". I don't think I would have started him.

"Sanchez has been focused, but when you have treatment on medical bench it is not easy".

'He was busy completing the transfer of Neymar.

With Laurent Koscielny suspended, Gabriel still nursing a knee injury and Shkodran Mustafi not yet match fit following his late arrival to pre-season training it means Wenger has limited options at the back. "I can take a gamble on one, maybe maximum two", Wenger said.

"Danny Welbeck played very well last week [in the Community Shield win over Chelsea] and Iwobe did very well in those wide positions".

"Plenty of uncertainties about players who didn't play against Chelsea - Ramsey, Ozil, Mertesacker". He has impressed immensely at right wing-back but with Hector Bellerin still coming through, it's hard to say who will be first choice.
