A man who escaped the Winfield Correctional Facility was apprehended hours after he was spotted hitchhiking in the Butler County town of Douglass.
Winfield Correctional Facility says Lewis Mitchell, 53, walked away from their facility and was last seen at 11 p.m. Herzet said a lot of manpower was needed because of earlier statements made by Mitchell that he wouldn't be taken alive.
Lewis is 6 feet 1 inches tall and weighs 210 pounds. He was last seen at 9:30 Tuesday evening.
Kansas Department of Corrections records indicate that Mitchell was serving a 27-month sentence after being convicted of felony burglary in 2016.
The search intensified Wednesday morning when a deputy in Douglass saw a man hitch-hiking.
Butler County, Andover, and Augusta worked with the U.S. Marshall's service on the search. He also may be wearing a red hoodie.
Officials say Mitchell is considered to be risky.
