Leaders of 18 opposition parties led by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will hold a meeting at 4.30 PM on Friday in Delhi to corner the NDA government on a range of issues.

Today's meeting made a decision to form a small group to coordinate with all Opposition parties during the session-break. Mr. Shivakumar had recently been through gruelling Income Tax raids soon after he took on the onerous task of safeguarding 40-odd Gujarat Congress MLAs from being poached by the BJP before the Rajya Sabha poll.

When asked about the absence of NCP at the meeting, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters he had personally spoken to Pawar, who in turn informed him that he was unwell and was therefore skipping the meeting. Apart from NCP, M Jose of Kerala Congress (Mani) excused himself from the meeting as he had a party programme on Friday.

Born Antonia Edvige Albina Maino on December 9, 1946, Sonia Gandhi is an Italy-born Indian politician. It was in meetings like these where these two were chosen as unanimous candidates.

To bolster its joint parliamentary strategy, the opposition has chose to come up with a small group which will coordinate with all the opposition leaders, discuss issues and come up with a plan of what should be raised in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.

The meeting is likely to discuss the opposition rally called by RJD chief Lalu Prasad in Patna on August 27, which will target the newly-formed BJP-JD-U alliance in Bihar under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, party leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge, party General Secretary and state in-charge K.C. Venugopal, state unit President G Parameshwara and other party leaders were present on the occasion. A party MP who took part in the deliberations, against the party's decision, was penalised.
