GETTY Paul Scholes has praised Man Utd for the signing of Nemanja Matic

Matic completed a £40 million transfer to Old Trafford at the end of last month, having been excused from Chelsea's preseason tour of the Far East when it became clear that he wanted to leave the Premier League champions in search of regular first-team football elsewhere.

"You saw that with Chelsea last year - him and Kante were magnificent last year and that allowed Hazard, Fabregas, whoever else was playing that bit of freedom, and I'm hoping he'll do that for United - a bit of freedom for Pogba, Martial, Lingard, Mkhitaryan - these players really need to step up this year".

Alongside Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic made competitive debuts for United.

"United were crying out for a central midfielder with the qualities of Nemanja Matic".

"You would applaud that but those players aren't even at the club now. It was certainly a position that Manchester United as a team needed to strengthen, and they've gone and done it with Matic".

The former Red Devils midfielder told Paddy Power: "Some people have said that they can't believe Chelsea let Matic go to United, and that they've handed them the title, but I don't see that".

The 23-year-old is not the finished article, but his energy and physical presence make his flawless for the Premier League. We are the most physical league.

"Pogba teased us past year". So I don't think he'll be a huge loss to them.

Speaking to Sky Sports News on Tuesday, Neville said: "I said last season that the title will come to Manchester and was badly wrong but I do feel it will be between City and United this time".

"It is hard job to play against a team that dominates the possession - and he tried", Mourinho said of his striker.

Almost 12 months on from his then world record transfer from Juventus, Pogba has emerged as a leader within Mourinho's squad and will certainly be looking to push on this season.

"At 29, I can understand why Chelsea sold him but it's still a good signing for Man United as there are not many of those players about".

My club is doing 75% of what I initially asked very well.
