The FBI confirms that Walter Yovany Gomez, one of its 10 Most Wanted fugitives, has been captured in Virginia. Authorities say Matute was Gomez's friend, and allegedly was a member of the Plainfield Locos Salvatrucha crew, a New Jersey branch of the notorious criminal network.
The FBI says that Gomez is a member of the MS-13 gang that has recently received new scrutiny after President Donald Trump vowed to crack down on the global group as part of his administration's immigration policies, following more than a dozen gang-related murders on Long Island.
Walter Yovany Gomez is wanted for his alleged involvement in the murder of a man in Plainfield, New Jersey, in May 2011.
Gomez is believed to affiliated with the gang MS-13, as was his victim Julio Matute. The victim was struck in the head numerous times, had his throat cut, and was stabbed 17 times in the back. It is not known if anybody will claim it, or how exactly Gomez was apprehended.
Gomez struck the victim in the head several times with an aluminum baseball bat, then slashed him in the throat with a knife and stabbed him 17 times in the back with a screwdriver, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.
Gomez had nearly been caught by authorities back in 2011 during a police chase following Matute's death.
He added that Gomez is expected to be extradited to Newark and face charges of murder and racketeering.
Back in July, President Donald Trump visited Long Island, New York, where MS-13 have been linked to 17 murders since January 2017, and called the gang out for turning "peaceful parks and attractive quiet neighborhoods into bloodstained killing fields". "They are there right now because of weak political leadership ... and in many cases police who are not allowed to do their job because they have a pathetic mayor or a mayor who does not know what's going on".
