Information from a "credible source" who has direct knowledge of what became of Trevor Deely, the 22-year-old Kildare man who vanished without trace in Dublin nearly 17 years ago, prompted gardai to begin searching woodlands on the city outskirts yesterday.

Mr Deely disappeared on his way home from a work Christmas party in the early hours of December 8, 2000.

It's hoped the latest search will lead to a breakthrough in the case. The site search is focused on an area on the Old Lucan Road in Chapelizod, Dublin 20.

Tragically, gardai have confirmed they've received information claiming Trevor Deely was murdered by a known criminal.

In April, Gardaí initiated a complete review of the investigation into his disappearance after enhanced CCTV footage showed him in contact with a man who detectives believe was "acting suspiciously".

Gardaí said this is a very stressful time for the Deely family and asked for their privacy to be respected.
