Rex Tillerson expected to press Asian Countries on North Korean threat

The Latest on developments on efforts to ratchet up pressure on North Korea over its nuclear program.

Over the last few years, North Korea has tested several ballistic missiles with varying degrees of success. The North Korean delegation appeared to adopt a more passive approach than in past years. He says stopping the launches would be the "first and strongest signal".

The ASEAN Regional Forum is one of the few multinational gatherings in which North Korea participates.

"We sent a message to them that all ASEAN countries are not happy with the actions of North Korea that still continue to violate the United Nations resolution", he told reporters, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Susan Thornton, the top US diplomat for Asia, said Beijing had historically cooperated with sanctions after flagrant North Korean violations but then slipped back over time.

Tillerson has said the Trump administration is willing to hold talks with North Korea, but that won't happen until Pyongyang agrees to abandon its nuclear program.

Tillerson aide R.C. Hammond said that after a productive first day, Tillerson spent several hours preparing for Day 2.

Representing the United States at the dinner was Susan Thornton - acting assistant secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs.

Ri was spotted at the gala smiling and toasting with the other foreign ministers.

But Washington says it will be watching closely to ensure that China doesn't ease up on the North - if and when the world's attention is diverted elsewhere. The 28 members include 10 ASEAN member states.

The Trump administration has made clear it does not favor the China-Russia plan, however.

The U.S. has been conducting military exercises with South Korea in waters surrounding the Korean peninsula.
