Reports said the Portuguese manager would like to work with the player again, but as nothing happened during that transfer window, the rumours ended up disappearing.
The Serbian joined the Red Devils in July in a £40m ($52m) move that saw him become Jose Mourinho's third signing of the summer following the arrival of Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku.
"But you know in our good moment he was really good, especially in our period of dominance in the second half after the 2-0". He has put his trust in me and in my work, and I was very grateful to him.
That being said Antonio Conte has taken some time to warm to Willian, and after the player spent a fair bit of time on the bench last season, the links between United and Willian returned - and according to the player himself, there was serious interest from United. If I have a new opportunity to work with him, it will be my pleasure.
"It was a big deal when Chelsea sold Petr Cech to Arsenal".
"He tried, and of course he missed his chance with an open goal but he scored his goal", Mourinho told a news conference.
"[Conte] is a coach who works hard every day, works a lot of tactics and the physical part".
But Mourinho was nevertheless impressed with his former Chelsea charge: "I think he played really well, I think in the moment they were moving the ball well of course was difficult for us in the midfield". Slow when needing to come out at meet Gareth Bale, he allowed the ball to be slipped in behind and was busy looking for the linesman's flag while Isco applied the finish.
"He had a good fight against two good central defenders and I'm happy with his period and I'm happy with the way he fits into - I'm not tired to repeat - an amazing group".
"Conte is a fantastic coach too, because he won everything at Juventus and has already won the Premier League in his first year with Chelsea".
