Kisner has PGA lead after wild finish

What's wrong with Rory McIlroy? Not as much as you might think.

Stricker: Mickelson needs to 'show me something' to earn spot on Presidents Cup team

Matsuyama started the third round of the PGA Championship tied for the lead with Kevin Kisner but never got into gear, a bogey at the first setting the table for a pedestrian one-over-par 72.

Stroud has become the surprise story of the tournament, teeing off in the final paring Sunday alongside tournament leader Kevin Kisner. Old warhorses Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els also missed cut on their 100th Major appearance.

For the longest time, the PGA Championship looked as though it might be a case of survival at Quail Hollow.

"I guess (from) beating up people on Tuesday", said Kisner, alluding to a certain prowess on the most popular day for money games among Tour players. He has not won an event since the 2013 British Open and is now ranked 17th in the U.S. Presidents Cup standings.

Kisner joined them with mistakes of his own, setting up a final round on a course that is playing as tough as any in the majors this year. "He's working hard", Day said. A nice 14-15 foot for par steadied me and on seventh two good shots to get to around 25 feet and two-putted for par.

"I've been on the (treatment) table a lot this week", he said.

However, as the shot tracker revealed, the veteran Aussie hit a low duck-hook which careered into the trees on the left, although he cared not a jot as he eventually tapped in for a double-bogey and a round of 79. "I'm sure there will be nerves in there, but that's what we play for and that's what we practice for". Stroud won the Barracuda Championship for his first PGA Tour victory in 290 tries.

He played basketball and football as a kid, but quickly learned his best chances were in a sport where size didn't matter as much. It's just these last two days I haven't scored very well.

"I had to give him a hug for it", Day said.

It seemed like a promising sign that he was two strokes off the lead after two rounds, earning a spot in the final group - something that hadn't happened in a major championship since that victory two years ago at Whistling Straits. I have to hit my tee ball where I'm trying to look, and if I don't, I have to find a way to get the ball in the hole the fastest.

But as he chased down Kisner on the back nine, he went backwards instead, hitting just one fairway and one green in his first six holes after the turn.

"It's the type of golf course you don't have to go out and make birdies. Because I would love to have him on the team". But this time it was worse with a double bogey and a bogey on first two holes.

One of the good things of the day was that some of the things that I worked on with Vijay (Divecha) sir worked out, like attitude on the golf course.
