Stepp, who used to live in Yorkville, took the job with the DNR in 2011.

Gov. Scott Walker said in a statement Tuesday, Cathy Stepp will become deputy administrator for the EPA's Region 7. Former DNR Secretary George Meyer says Stepp's move to the EPA overseeing Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and nine tribal nations worries him.

Walker praised Stepp as a strong trusted reformer. "We will miss her optimism and energy at the DNR, and we wish her success in her new role". In her resignation memo, Stepp said she's excited about the possibility of bringing some of the reforms her agency put in place in Wisconsin to the national stage Stepp served as a state Senator representing the 21st district from 2003-2007, where she co-chaired the Environmental and Natural Resources Committee.

Walker also announced he has appointed Kurt Thiede, the current DNR deputy secretary, as interim secretary effective Thursday. This is the second cabinet vacancy in Walker's administration in less than a month.
