India head coach Ravi Shastri has dismissed doubts about Mahendra Singh Dhoni's global future, saying that the team management can not even think of removing the Ranchi stalwart considering his current form and fitness.
Coach Shastri expects something big from Dhoni, as the gaffer feels the Sri Lanka series was just a trailer. His fitness is superb, he batted well in Sri Lanka. "I give full credit to the boys because the professional approach with which they have played is commendable. To maintain that level of consistency is not easy", Shastri told India TV during an exclusive chat.
"If he keeps performing like that (in Sri Lanka), how can you even think of anything else?"
"We were not thinking of winning the tour 9-0". "We have to win the first two matches".
The team head coach said: "I have a problem. He is an elder statesman in the dressing room", Shastri added.
Shastri said if Dhoni can cantinue to perform like this then there's no question of not having him in the 2019 World Cup. This time when I entered the dressing room as coach after 18 months, it felt as if I have returned home to meet my family. "It was very easy compared to the last time when I took over as the Team Director in England", he said.
Shastri said, he has talked to BCCI officials seeking rest for the players after the series with Australia.
That Virat Kohli and MSDhoni command a lot of respect and love from across the border is not a surprise, but it was indeed a pleasant surprise for both the Indian superstars to be remembered by Pakistani fans on a historic occasion. Kohli leads this team from the front. If you see his wicket-keeping, he is the best in ODI cricket. He is now more comfortable, he is not anxious and much more calm.
Ravi Shastri reiterated that the captain is always the boss of the team and added that the job of the support staff is to help the players with their preparations.
"Captain is the boss of the team".
