Olympics-Paris awarded 2024 Olympics, Los Angeles gets 2028 Games-IOC

It provided official confirmation that Los Angeles will stage the Games for a third time having hosted the 1932 and 1984 editions.

Johnson's last outing at the Olympics came in Sydney in 2000, where he successfully defended his 400m title, but the 50-year-old will have no feelings of envy towards any competitors when the Games return to United States soil in 2028.

On Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that the French capital would host the 2024 Olympics, while Los Angeles was awarded the 2028 Games.

Wednesday's announcement marks the first time the International Olympic Committee has awarded the summer games to two different cities in the same announcement.

IOC President Thomas Bach presented Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo with cards displaying Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028. It marks the first time that the global body has awarded two Summer Olympics at the same time.

As if to show they weren't anxious about today's vote, members of the Los Angeles bid committee wore sneakers to their presentation. The last USA city to host the summer Olympics was Atlanta in 1996.

"We believe that these extra four years will give us time to make our games better", Evans said.

It marked the final act of a campaign that had been stripped of the usual intrigue ever since Paris and Los Angeles agreed to carve up 2024 and 2028 in July following encouragement from the IOC.

"As a team and as a city, we could not be more excited to be entering into this long-term partnership with the Olympic and Paralympic movements, and with one of the great cities of the world, Paris", he said.

Paris last hosted the games in 1924.
