Emergency crews find vehicle underwater in Portsoy search

A young man has died after his auto plunged into a river in Aberdeenshire.

The vehicle was found under water in the Burn of Boyne, just off the A98 at Tillynaught, Portsoy, on Wednesday evening. It is fully submerged within the water.

Police later confirmed that a man has been flown to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

His next of kin have been informed. The Macduff lifeboat was also launched.

The 4×4 was found underwater at around 5.30pm.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "In relation to the ongoing incident at Tillynaught, Portsoy, police can confirm that the vehicle has been located".

"A significant search and rescue operation was launched in order to trace the man and I would like to thank members of the local community who assisted us and the emergency service personnel who attended".

A man is thought to have been in the auto when it entered the water.

"There does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course".

The area suffered heavy rainfall earlier, leading to problems with surface water on the roads.
