Hoedt insists he and Southampton rebel Van Dijk can play together

Premier League: Southampton's Wesley Hoedt relishes 'strong partnership' with compatriot Virgil van Dijk

Southampton new boy Wesley Hoedt is keen to form a partnership with worldwide compatriot Virgil van Dijk, despite his new teammate's desire to leave St Mary's.

"We're both Dutch so that's an advantage and we're very similar so we could have a very good partnership", Hoedt said about his Netherlands worldwide teammate, as reported by the Daily Echo.

But he's also aware that Saints have top competition at centre-back, with Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek frontline options.

Hoedt says he is impressed Southampton managed to hang on to Van Dijk during the transfer window, claiming it shows the ambition the club has going forward.

The imposing Van Dijk, who was wanted by Liverpool, played 90 minutes for Southampton's youth side earlier this week and could return to the first team when the Saints visit Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

"That was their ambition and that's something that I really liked and they wanted me really fast so that was really why I wanted to come here".

Palace are bottom after losing their four games without scoring and appointed former England manager Roy Hodgson as manager on Tuesday a day after sacking Dutchman Frank de Boer.
