Cell phone video taken by La Puente resident Ashley Wrenn shows her grandfather approaching the intruder on the roof, grabbing him and shoving him off.
A crisis negotiator tried to convince the man to come down, she said.
"Stand off w/man jumping on roof tops ended by 83 yr old man who got exhausted of his games and pushed him off The grandpa did what we couldn't", he tweeted.
Finally, roughly five hours after police first received the call, Burgess decided he had had enough.
In a video of the incident, Burgess is seen pushing and shoving the man and giving him a few "choice words" before the man is launched off the front of the roof and slams onto the hood of Burgess' vehicle.
Wrenn said she woke up around 7 a.m. and heard deputies yelling at someone.
"I said. 'I'm going up on the roof, that sucker's coming off, '" he told ABC.
Or, as police told the Mercury News, the resident "escorted" the suspect off the roof. "He pushed the guy to a corner of the roof and threw him off the roof", Wrenn said. "I tell everybody, 'Just because you're old, that don't mean you got to sit down". When he landed he damaged Wrenn's mother's auto, she said.
Burgess said he took his neighbor's ladder and told deputies he was climbing onto the roof while his granddaughter recorded the confrontation.
She said she was thankful her grandfather was protecting his family.
Authorities tell KABC-TV that the suspect was taken into custody and was admitted to a hospital for a mental evaluation.
Wrenn said she isn't surprised her elderly grandfather did what he did. "It wasn't a surprise to us".
