An unnamed man filed a child sex abuse lawsuit against the mayor in April, alleging that Murray had "repeatedly criminally raped and molested" him when he was a homeless 15-year-old in the 1980s.

After a fifth man came out accusing openly gay Seattle mayor Ed Murray of molesting him, Murray has made a decision to resign.

Murray had already said earlier that he would not seek a second term as mayor.

Murray announced Tuesday that he was stepping down effective 5 p.m. Wednesday. Director of Operations Fred Podesta will lead the transition. Two other men were also quoted saying that Murray abused them.

"While the allegations against me are not true, it is important that my personal issues do not affect the ability of our city government to conduct the public's business", the mayor said.

"To the people of this special city and to my dedicated staff, I am sorry for this painful situation".

News of the sexual-abuse accusation upstaged an announcement scheduled for Tuesday in which Murray was going to share details of a memorandum of understanding between the city and Oak View Group regarding the redevelopment of KeyArena. Murray denied the allegations.

Seattle has a new mayor. The accusers claim that Murray molested them when they were teenagers decades before he went into politics.
