Partial list of winners of the annual Emmy Awards, announced Sunday by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The Handmaid's Tale star Ann Dowd was shocked after her name was called as victor of the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category, beating out the likes of This Is Us'Chrissy Metz, Stranger Things'Millie Bobby Brown and Westworld's Thandie Newton.

In a year populated by plenty of buzzy new dramas, the hit new series scooped up eight wins, including supporting actress Ann Dowd, director Reed Morano, and writer Bruce Miller.

Donald Glover won the best comedy actor for Atlanta, which he created and which carries his distinctive voice, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus was honoured for a sixth time for her role as a self-absorbed politician in Veep, named best comedy for the third time.

After back-to-back wins for Transparent, Jill Soloway, who rally-cried for Hollywood to topple the patriarchy, was shut out of the Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.

"The Handmaid's Tale" took home five Emmys for Hulu.

The audience lost it when former White House press secretary Sean Spicer appeared.

John Lithgow won the first award of the night, Outstanding Supporting Actor for playing Winston Churchill on The Crown.

He also wins the award for best dad for getting his kid on the air by shouting out to the director of the Emmys to make sure to cut to her.

Accepting the variety-sketch award, series creator Lorne Michaels referenced the political climate that has powered the show recently.

Milo Ventimiglia, one of the Emmy-nominated stars of heartbreaking family drama "This Is Us", told reporters he was "excited to celebrate our group", and its success in its first season.
