IDF Says Shoots Down Drone Over Golan Heights Frontier With Syria

-Gen, Ronen Manelis the Hezbollah-operated drone which took off from Damascus International Airport and was followed in real time by the Israel army before it crossed the demilitarized zone and was intercepted by one Patriot missile. It also was not clear whether the drone was meant to enter Israeli-controlled airspace or had accidentally approached it.

The Patriot interceptor missile was launched from a military installation in northern Israel, near the city of Safed.

The Iranian-built drone was used by Hezbollah to collect intelligence, Manelis said, adding that fighter jets were also scrambled but did not fire on the drone which fell in the area of the Syrian town of Quneitra.

Israel launched a Patriot missile at a drone that almost infiltrated from Syria into Israeli territory over the Golan Heights, according to the IDF.

News of the drone's downing came just hours before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was to address the U.N. General Assembly about Iran's rising influence in the region, particularly in Syria.

"A short while ago, the IDF intercepted a UAV that attempted to infiltrate Israeli airspace in the Golan Heights", the IDF said on its Twitter account.

In addition, Russian and Iranian forces are fighting in Syria in support of President Bashar Assad.

"The UAV belongs to the Hezbollah terror organization and was most likely on a reconnaissance mission", the IDF said in a statement.

The Golan area, which separates Israel from Syria, has seen some spill-over violence from the Syrian civil war.
