A teenager was shot Friday after a fight broke out between three students and at least two other people in a vehicle in a parking lot near Doherty High School, Colorado Springs police said. Shortly before 5 p.m., he was in serious but stable condition.
"We know that someone from that vehicle jumped out with a handgun and fired at least one, if not more shots", Lt. Howard Black said. Another ran into a tree while attempting to escape and was injured. Officers say at least three students were involved in a confrontation involving other students inside a vehicle. The district says the parents of both of those injured have been contacted.
There's no word on whether a suspect or suspects have been apprehended.
Nearby elementary schools were also placed on lock-down because of the incident.
Students who were off campus for lunch were told to stay where they were; no one will be allowed in or out of the school during the lockdown.
District officials said Grant Elementary School, which is about two miles away from Doherty, went on lockdown earlier this morning due to an unrelated police investigation. "Staff is doing everything possible to keep students and staff safe", Colorado Springs School District 11 said on Twitter.
This is a developing story.
A shooting in a Family Dollar parking lot across the street from Doherty High School forced students and staff to shelter in place around 12 p.m. Friday.
