Investigators have appealed for witnesses after the pedestrian was struck on Henry Lawson Drive in Milperra shortly before 5am today.

The woman's friends and paramedics tried to revive her, but she could not be saved.

It is believed she was struck by an older model white Toyota utility which failed to stop.

The auto was last seen travelling south on Henry Lawson Drive which has now been closed while the crash scene is examined.

The area was closed while police established a crime scene, with motorists urged to avoid the area.

A woman killed in a hit and run is the fifth person to die during a deadly 48 hours on NSW roads.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit are investigating and have asked for anyone with information about the vehicle involved to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
