Suspect shot, killed; police officer stabbed in deadly encounter

At approximately 4 p.m. police said they responded to an altercation at a residence in the 100 block of Madrigal Close after reports of a stabbing.

Winnipeg police say a man is dead, following a serious incident that closed off a residential street in The Maples.

Police said a member of the Tactical Support Team was stabbed in the upper part of his body by a 33-year-old man, following the officers arrival.

A tourniquet was applied and the injured officer was transported to hospital in unstable condition.

"As officers responded to this call, my understanding was that it was very chaotic", said police spokesperson Const. Jay Murray at a hastily-called press briefing Saturday evening before it was revealed that the suspect had died.

According to a release Sunday, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) was immediately notified of the incident and investigators were deployed at the scene which remained taped off for much of Sunday.

The Winnipeg Police Service public information officer joined the online community three months ago, after noticing inaccurate speculation about police activity.

The IIU also said they have asked the Manitoba Police Commission to appoint a civilian monitor.
