Huawei has just taken the wraps off a duo of new phones at a launch event in Munich. But only the 6-inch Mate 10 Pro is built around the increasingly popular 18:9 display ratio, while the 5.9-inch Mate 10 sticks to a classic, 16:9 proportions. Also, there is no 3.5mm audio jack on Mate 10 Pro, but Huawei has made it available on Mate 10. A puzzling choice indeed, the Mate 10 packs more pixels per inch on its 5.9-inch screen, meaning that visuals on the 6-inch Mate 10 Pro might not be as sharp. There's also a toned down version, the Huawei Mate 10, that ships with slightly toned down specs like 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage.
In terms of specifications, the Mate 10 Porsche Design is the same Mate 10 Pro but comes with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. They are also the first Android smartphones to feature a dedicated AI engine powered by the Neural Processing Unit inside the Kirin 970 SoC.
Huawei is really going all guns blazing here in an attempt to rival Apple's iPhone 8 with Yu himself claiming that the Huawei Mate 10 series will surpass Apple's iPhone 8. It will be able to detect contents of an image really fast, and it will also be able to optimize your device for long-term usage using AI.
The HUAWEI Mate 10 Series is the flawless travel companion: the world's first Dual-SIM, Dual-4G, Dual-HD-Call support allows the user to simply insert their chosen SIM cards and choose which one to use, whilst the AI Accelerated Translator helps break language barriers, instantly translating text, voice, conversations and images into 50+ languages across devices. Now, we didn't get a solid number, but the Mate 9 Pro was priced at RM3,399 when it launched so we think the Mate 10 Pro will be around the RM3,199 or RM3,299 mark. The device otherwise is essentially same on the inside, but Porsche Design has done a bunch of changes on the outside of the device.
Following the trend, the new Huawei smartphones also feature FullView displays offering long 18:9 aspect ratio. Huawei says that the Kirin 970 is twice as fast as Apple's latest iPhone 8, and offers a 20 per cent increase in efficiency compared to the previous Kirin generation, as well as a 20 per cent boost on the world's first 12-core Mali GPU. We'll update you when we know more. For example, the Huawei Mate 10 comes in at 150.5 x 77.8 x 8.2mm and 186g, while the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is 154.2 x 74.5 x 7.9mm and 178g. The body of the phone is encased in a more luxurious design. They combine 12-megapixel RGB + 20-megapixel monochrome sensors, Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), dual lenses with the world's largest aperture of f/1.6, AI-powered Bokeh Effect and AI-powered Digital Zoom. The latest Mate 10, arriving today with a full load of trendy features, is no exception. This allows for native AI processing to be combined with cloud-based AI, helping the Mate 10 to become more intelligent and provide a more personalised experience. Plus, what's not to love about a monster 4000mAh battery for proper two-day battery life?
Both phones follow the recent hot market trend of increasing touchscreen real estate by slimming down the front bezels.
