Most of the structures appear to be barracks and garages. "I'd say even by the week", Dermer said.

With details still emerging on Israel's Friday attack against a military site south of the Syrian capital city of Damascus, a strike which Israeli media have presented as being an attack against Iran, a new round of strikes was reported Monday night, against different targets in metro Damascus.

Mr Pompeo, who leads the list of contenders to possibly replace Rex Tillerson as secretary of state, confirmed that he sent a letter recently to Maj Gen Qassem Soleimani, head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's foreign operations arm.

There was no official Israeli comment.

The pro-regime al-Masdar News said Israeli jets had fired at least seven missiles from Lebanese air space, scoring a direct hit with at least four of the missiles on a target in Jamraya.

If true, this would be the first reported operational use of the Jericho 1 ballistic missile.

"What the Iranians have done across the Middle East is fuel and accelerate cycles of violence so that they can take advantage of chaos and weak states to make them dependent on Iran for support", the national security adviser said.

A satellite image showing the results of an alleged Israeli airstrike on a reported Iranian base being set up outside Damascus, from November 16, 2017.

Images of the base broadcast by the BBC showed "a series of two dozen large low-rise buildings, likely for housing soldiers and vehicles". Israel occupied the Golan Heights during the 1967 Six-Day War with Syria, with the international community refusing the recognize Israel's annexation of the territory.

The threat in particular is the "prospect of Iran having a proxy army on the borders of Israel".

Israel has long viewed Iran as its enemy number one. "We'll find out in the months ahead, particularly as ISIL melts away and Tehran seeks to fill the void in Iraq and Syria". I don't want to tell you by the year or by the month. While the BBC stated that it could not independently verify the purpose of the base and presence of Iranian troops, Israel has warned of the growing entrenchment of Iran in Syria.
