California issues 1st licence for Cannabis Business

Maryland Regulators OK 12 New Medical Pot Dispensaries

The state on Thursday issued the first batch of business licenses to sell and transport recreational-use pot, just 18 days before legal sales will begin on Jan. 1.

"I couldn't be more excited", CEO Jordan Lams said.

Experts predict that the California recreational marijuana industry is currently worth $7 billion.

There are 22 dispensaries across the state allowed to open. The licenses that the dispensaries received will only be valid for 120 days, so these companies will have to move quickly to obtain permanent licenses in the new year.

This week, California issued temporary licenses to a handful of cannabis companies in the first wave of licenses expected to be released ahead of Jan. 1. Once inside, the business looks like a stylish pharmacy with wood floors and Christmas decorations. "So making sure our internal point of sales system is set up to tax separately, the state sale tax and the 15 percent excise tax", said Garzot.

The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission gave the final sign-off to Positive Energy in Worcester County; Harvest of Maryland, Bloom Medicinals and Herbology in Montgomery County; Nature's Cure and Wellness in Cecil County; Pure Life Medical and Medical Products and Services in Baltimore City; Revolution Relief and Zen Leaf in Howard County; Charm City Medicus and Temescal Wellness in Baltimore County; and Haven in Prince George's County. A patchwork is emerging with some cities embracing legal sales and others banning commercial pot activity.

Still, regulators cautioned that the supply is still low.

In a press release, KindPeoples said that their microbusiness license allows them to vertically integrate one of their locations, and that the manufacturing license will allow them to continue producing their in-house brand, KindExtracts. Cities throughout the state have also passed their own rules and regulations for the industry that will affect the laws in minor ways.

To date, more than 1,900 users have registered with the online system, and more than 200 applications have been submitted.

The dispensaries include KindPeoples in Santa Cruz, Torrey Holistics in San Diego, Buddy's Cannabis in San Jose and 530 Cannabis in Shasta Lake.

In the background is widespread uncertainty about whether President Donald Trump's administration will attempt to intervene in states where marijuana is legal. These dispensaries can now call themselves among the first in the state who earned the privilege of selling recreational cannabis on New Year's Day.
