Transgender whistle-blower Chelsea Manning, jailed for leaking classified information, is seeking election in the US state of Maryland. Nevertheless, many others label her a traitor for leaking sensitive data on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the inmates in Guantánamo.

It was while in prison that Manning received gender reassignment surgery.

Federal Election Commission documents show Chelsea Elizabeth Manning of North Bethesda, Md., has filed paperwork to run as a Democrat, a move that would pit her against two-term Sen.

Ben Cardin is Maryland's senior senator, serving since 2007.

In addition to posing for Vogue's September issue, and being the focus of the upcoming Showtime documentaty "XY Chelsea", Manning uses her online platform to advocate for free speech, civil rights and for the LGBTQ community.

Senator Cardin was elected in 2006 was easily re-elected in 2012, beating his Republican challenger by 30 points in the heavily-Democratic state. She was released from military prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas last year.

The primary will be held on June 26, 2018, ahead of the Nov. 6 general election that Democrats are eying as a chance to retake Congress and restrain president Donald Trump.

Maryland Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Matthews did not immediately return a comment request.

Manning, originally from Oklahoma, moved to Maryland after her release.

"My goal is to use these next six months to figure out where I want to go", she told the magazine. He sits on several committees and is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. After some high-profile government officials, including CIA Director Mike Pompeo, refused to teach or lecture at the school in protest, her fellowship was rescinded. His campaign war chest already boasts funds upwards of $2 million. When reports broke last week that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were raiding 7-11 stores, Manning called the agency "the new Gestapo". I've been in the headlines.

The document said Manning had committed a crime outside the country that "would equate to an indictable offense, namely treason" in Canada and which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment.
